 Moccasin 2

The construction is very stright forward. It requires no jigs, strongbacks or framing. There are only 7 basic steps to complete your boat:

1.) 4 millimeter plywood shapes (given in plan) are joined to create the special "butterfly" layout

2.) ends are folded into position with soft ties, and the seams are "stitched"

3.) sides are joined at the center

4.)breasthooks and inwales are installed.

5.) fillet and tape seams with epoxy

6.) gunwales, spreaders and keel are installed

7.) finishing: epoxy coat and use a paint system of our choice

Materials used in Moccasin:

Plywood: Hull panels:2 sheets 3/16" {4mm} marine (okume suggested)

Solid Stock: (all given in finished sizes and metric given in { }): Gunwales & inwales 36' {11M} - 3/4" X 3/4" {20mm X 20mm}; keel (optional): 7' {2.13M }- 3/4" X 3/4" {20mm X 20mm}; spreaders: 4' {1.25M} - 2" X 3/4" { 50mm X 20mm}; breasthooks: 20" { .5 M} - 6" X 3/4" {150mm X 20mm} pretty wood (mahogany suggested); paddle shaft: 8' {2.5M} - 1 1/4" X 1" { 32mm X 10mm}

Epoxy: 3/4 gallon marine grade {3 L}

Fiberglass tape: 65' {20M} treated 2" X 8oz {50mm X

Fastenings: 8 - 11/4"# 8 flat head wood screws; 11 - 3/4" #6 flat head machine screws; 8 1 1/2" #10 flat head machine screws; assorted drywall screws, brads staples etc...for temporary fastenings

Moccasin and Moccasin 2

General Supplies: Sandpaper grits in 60-220; tongue depressors or home made filleting sticks; rubber gloves, vinegar (to clean up uncured epoxy from tools and hands), mask dust filtration when sanding, safety glasses/goggles, large pushpins or small brads; squeegee (bought or home made)

Half folded hull.

Thanks to the use of computer aided design, we have been able to combine two plywood construction methods, taking advantage of the best qualities of both and avoiding the inherent complications and restrictions of either.

Folded plywood technique allow for the full buoyant ends which will allow the boat to stay dry and ride over waves. The ends are married into a stitch and glue chine amidships for good form stability.
